Born and Bred in DUMBO.

I met Ed, Edwin Garcia at the entrance to the York St “F” train in DUMBO. Ed told me that he had lived his whole life in DUMBO - his parents were originally from Puerto Rico and Haiti.

A few days before he was in a video with a Hip Hop band he knew. He said that they mostly play in Manhattan, not Brooklyn - neutral territory, no trouble.

He was interested in learning photography and had been researching 2nd hand cameras on eBay - ones that shoot video. He thought he could learn to shoot video of the bands he knew and also to make a little extra money.

He thought that the changes in DUMBO were good, but was looking for ways to move out of the neighbourhood.

Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of the Sacrifice” was celebrated last week by muslims throughout the world. It marks the end of the Hajj to Mecca, and honours the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son to Allah.

In the neighbourhood of Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York, members pray at one of the many mosques, such as Masjid at-Taqwa on Fulton St. A nearby local “live” meat market in Crown Heights allows muslims to sacrifice their own animals, which are typically shared with family or friends later in the day. It is customary to give part of the sacrifice to members of the community who are in need.

Coolest visitor to the farmer’s market yesterday. A lady driving a ‘71 Chevy picking up supplies for her church. Even the farmer wanted a photo with her.
