Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of the Sacrifice” was celebrated last week by muslims throughout the world. It marks the end of the Hajj to Mecca, and honours the willingness of the prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son to Allah.

In the neighbourhood of Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York, members pray at one of the many mosques, such as Masjid at-Taqwa on Fulton St. A nearby local “live” meat market in Crown Heights allows muslims to sacrifice their own animals, which are typically shared with family or friends later in the day. It is customary to give part of the sacrifice to members of the community who are in need.
